Emoting And Such

Category: Let's talk

What is the point of all this excessive use of emotes that is being used in quicknotes? Of course it's nice to know how people are actually reacting to what is being said, but from my standpoint I only use 'lol', *smile* etc if I'm actually doing it.

For example what is the point of writing 'lololololol'? Either you're laughing out loud or you're not; you can't be "laughing out loud out loud out loud". I think it's lazy and it detracts from whatever else you're saying.

So what do you think? And let me save you some time: pedant, grammar police and - oh yes, "you don't care how you write on here, it's not a test"

I know very few emotes. On a lot of the sites geared toward sighted people, there's a smile made with shift 6 then a dash, then another shift 6, like this: ^-^ and if I'm on one of those sites, I will use it, since that's what they seem to understand. (in other words, speaking their language.) The smile with tongue out, :P is another one, but for the most part, I just surround my expressions with *. Sometimes I'll use hahahaha for a laugh, and gur'r'r'r're! or guhrhrhrhrhrhrh! when I'm expressing frustration, but too much emoting kinda strikes me as fake. Not saying that it is, it's just how I personally view it. In a few years, I wonder if we'll all talk in emotes as well. We'll here something funny and say, "LOL." *snicker*

That's why I turned off public quicknotes, because I agree that if you do that too much, it loses its effect.

Same with dez. I'll use colon right paren for my smile, and colon D for my grin, and sometimes colon P for the tongue out, but I rarely ever use lol or any of that, but their r times when I'll use *smile*. Too much of it, does sound fake, and it just looks really stupid.

I use lots of smilies. :), :(, :D, :P, xD, o_O, et cetera, so I can't really say anything about that sort of emoting. But I do agree about the 'lololol' thing, and also 'lmaooooooo' and 'roflroflroflrofl'. It's meant to show higher degrees of amusement and all that, but it does seem a bit unnecessary, and for some reason 'lmaoooooooooo' in particular has always annoyed me.

Laughing my ass off off off off off off off off? *snicker* how much sense does that make. I can see why it would anoy anyone.

i only use emotes if i actually think something is funny, or if i'm having a joke with someone. i don't use :) on here, cause jaws says it as : ) not as smiley or smiley with tung out. that is what anoys me. if i think something is worth a smile, i'll write *smiles* or *crys* i kno that for a sighted person :) actually comes up as a smiley face, but for thoes of us just relying on a screen reader, it gets really anoying when someone ends their sentences with : ) or : p. sometimes the lmaooooooo can be anoying, but it just means that someone is laughing really hard at a comment being made. i also agree that the emotes can be over used at times as well.

The only thing about any of this that really anoys me, is when people change it so that their screen reader will sound "cool" which personally i don't think it does. so it's not that they're laughing their ass off off off off off it's the extra o's are there to make it sound good. it's partly an asumption that it sounds good, and an asumption that everyone uses the same synth and so it will sound the same for all. it doesn't, to me it sounds stupid, and does detract from the emotion that is being portrayed.
